So disappointing. A series of absurd, sappy emotional scenes entirely about familiar bonds, followed by a too-brief bit of CGI tidal wave wiping out manhattan.
The threat of extinction is so ripe for material -- it's an existential artist's playground, but all the film makers could muster up amounts to the simple lesson that families are most important, and it's helpful to make feeble glances toward religion when death comes knocking. Despite having only one thing to say, the story actually is diluted by too many subplots (all with the same theme!). It's at once too ambitious and too simple-minded.
I was really rooting for the comet; it's a shame those heroic astronauts had to ruin the big show at the last moment. I suppose there was no budget for the "extinction level event."
